Everyone would like the anti-theft benefits of having a proactive GPS tracker fitted to their car or caravan. But is the cost justified? Firstly there is the initial outlay, then the expense of fitting the device and the ongoing annual subscription to a call centre. The total cost can be well over £300 with additional annual subscriptions of £100 - £200.

GPS Security Tracker: A self-monitoring unit which uses the 
GPS navigational system to determine its position and then communicates this information using text messaging to up to five authorised mobile phones. You can dial up the unit and it will reply with a text message giving its GPS co-ordinates; or you can set it to inform you if it moves outside a given geographical area. The only costs in addition to the purchase price will be the cost of a SIM card for the tracker and your network's charges for text messages.
When you park your vehicle, just text an instruction to the tracker and if the vehicle moves you will receive a text message on your phone. Thereafter you can check the vehicle's whereabouts by calling the tracker, which will reply by text message with its new co-ordinates. If your vehicle has been stolen, you can inform the police, give them the details and let them do the rest.
Stockade is a small unit, approximately 5 x 7 x 1.5 cm, and is powered by the vehicle battery. It also has its own internal back-up battery which lasts for 4 -8 days.
RFID (Radio Frequency IDentification) microchips: These small chips, the same as those used to identify pets, can be hidden anywhere as long as they are not shielded by metal. Each chip has a unique 15-digit number. Trading Standards offices are required by law to own scanners capable of reading the chips.
Anti-Tamper ID tags: These holographic, self-adhesive tags can be fixed to any flat surface, and provide a clear warning that the item is marked and probably has other ID (such as a microchip) all of which have been registered on a secure database accessible by the police. Removal of the tags is difficult and time-consuming, and leaves behind a permanent marking.
Signs for garage doors and windows help to deter theft.
Registration: All identity marks can be registered FREE FOR LIFE on the secure police database The National Mobile Property Register www.thenmpr.com. Photographs and manufacturers' serial numbers can be included. Evidence linking property with its rightful owner is an essential weapon in helping to bring those who steal, or who deal in stolen property, to justice.
